Professor Allan Fels, Chair of the National Mental Health Commission, addressed the National Press Club on Tuesday 25th July to launch Equally Well.
As a consensus statement, Equally Well highlights the poor physical health of persons with mental illness and the alarming life expectancy of persons with severe mental illness. Equally Well calls for better collaboration and coordination between governments, professional bodies, social and community services and other leaders in mental health to make the physical health of people living with mental illness a national priority.
Neami National is one of 53 organisations that support the Statement. Neami has a strong physical health promotion stance and has a variety of tools staff use to prompt health discussions with consumers.
Professor Fels has also recently called for a "radical rethink" of the inclusion of mental illness in the National Disability Insurance Scheme. You can read more about that at the Sydney Morning Herald.
