Low Intensity Optimal Health Program creating change in local communities

Neami has recently begun a series of new Optimal Health Program groups in North Brisbane aimed at supporting LGBTIQ, CALD, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and corrections communities.

Two Community Rehabilitation and Support Workers from Neami’s Darra and Strathpine services have been actively promoting the groups and have received a great response from the local community.

Funded through the Brisbane North PHN, the groups began in April and have funding through until June 2018.

Four groups are running at a number of locations, including a library and a neighbourhood centre. Three of these are open groups, and immediate carers and family of the consumers are welcome to join. Consumers do not have to be engaged with a Neami service to attend. The fourth group, offered to those in corrections, is closed.

The groups are seeing a range of peopleattending – from twenty year olds through to those in their sixties, and a good gender mix. They are also a mixture of people with severe mental health issues and others that require a less intense service response.

Neami staff in North Brisbane hope to run a group later in the year to assist people who have experienced significant life transitions such as losing a job or the death of a loved one.
